Wadi Mujib & Dead Sea Tours

Almost every listing describes this as a hike. It is not, in any sense that word usually carries. The Siq Trail goes up a river, inside a slot canyon, through water that is frequently waist-deep and occasionally over your head, with short waterfalls you pull yourself up on fixed ropes. You wear a life jacket. You will be soaked from the first ten minutes.

That is the appeal. But it means two things: you need to be reasonably mobile and comfortable in moving water, and you need to be there in the right half of the year.

The season is the whole story

The Mujib Biosphere Reserve runs the Siq Trail roughly from 1 April to 31 October, and closes it from November through March. That is not a staffing decision — the canyon drains a large catchment, and winter rain produces flash floods in a slot with nowhere to go. Even inside the season the reserve closes the trail at short notice after heavy rain, and can shorten the season at either end.

So a Wadi Mujib and Dead Sea combination is a warm-season booking, and one worth confirming close to the date. Every tour on this page has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which is exactly the flexibility this trip needs.

Why it pairs with the Dead Sea so naturally

Wadi Mujib empties into the Dead Sea, and the reserve’s visitor centre sits directly on the Dead Sea Highway a short drive south of the resort strip. You do not detour to reach one from the other — the canyon is on the shoreline.

The sequence most operators use is canyon first, sea second, and it is the right way round. You come out of the Siq cold, tired and covered in river silt; twenty minutes later you are floating effortlessly in water so dense you cannot sink. It is the most enjoyable contrast available on any day trip from Amman.

What to bring, and what to leave

Bring: shoes you can swim in and that will not come off — proper water shoes or old trainers, never flip-flops. Swimwear plus a quick-dry layer. A dry change of clothes for the drive home. Sunscreen for the Dead Sea half.

Leave in the car: your phone, unless it is in a sealed dry bag; anything you would mind losing to water; and the day’s dignity, briefly.

Note on entry fees: the reserve charges separately and several listings here cover the transport and not the trail admission. Check the inclusions. One of the tours on this page explicitly includes entrance to the free Salt Beach but not the Mud Beach — that level of detail is worth reading before you book.

Two trails, not one. The Siq Trail is the short, wet, no-guide-required route most tours mean. The reserve also runs longer canyoning routes — the Malaqi and Ibex trails among them — which need a guide and a different level of fitness. If a listing says “Wadi Mujib” without saying which trail, ask.
